The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded on April 13, 1870, “to be located in the City of New York… encouraging and developing the study of the fine arts…”  By the twentieth century, the Met had become one of the world’s great art centers. Today, the Met’s two-million-square-foot building houses over two million objects, tens of thousands of which are on view at any given time.

The Met was the first public institution in the world to acquire a work of art by Henri Matisse.  The Met’s houses twenty-six thousand ancient Egyptian objects, the largest collection of Egyptian art outside of Cairo.
