The Louvre evolved from a 12th century fortress; the dwelling of François I and, later, the palace of the Sun King, Louis XIV into an extraordinary museum which opened in 1793. A museum among museums. Accumulated riches of art, on a scale unrivaled anywhere in the world, makes the Louvre a place of learning, delight, and discovery for millions of visitors of all backgrounds.
