The Van Gogh Museum opened in 1973. A visit to the Van Gogh Museum provides the unique opportunity to track Van Gogh’s developments and to compare his paintings to works by other artists from the 19th century in the collection. The museum also holds an extensive offer of exhibitions on various subjects from 19th-century art history.

The Van Gogh Museum consists of two buildings: the main structure (I) designed by Gerrit Rietveld and opened in 1973, and the Exhibition Wing (II) by Kisho Kurokawa completed in 1999. The new entrance is expected to be finished by the summer of 2015. The Van Gogh Museum will remain open to the public throughout the building work.
